Getting Ready to Leave

First of all I want to start off by saying thank you to everyone who has donated and prayed for me. I would not be able to get into a trip like this if it wasn't for outside support. I appreciate future prayers as I continue into my year of service. Thank you.

It is eight days before I leave for my orientation in Chicago and I have just started to begin packing. I believe that I have everything that I need on the packing list except for things that would be useful more than necessary (like a digital camera and a watch). I have been trying to see some close friends before I leave.

I discovered, last week, that I am assigned to work at Mexico City in Mexico. I will be working for a company called PRODESC which stands for Proyecto de Derechos Económicos Sociales y Culturales. That means Project of Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. Prodesc is a nonprofit that defends worker's rights in national and multinational corporations. They have fought in big court cases against McDonald's and the government of Canada.

It sounds like I will be helping with communication. Prodesc will be launching a new website at some point and wants it to be compatible with social media. I do have some experience with web design (from high school) and I am familiar with how social media works. I am excited to try my best to help out the company.

Now onto how I feel about leaving on this trip. I have mixed feelings. I am both anxious and enthusiastic to leave. I do not know how I will fit into another culture and environment like Mexico. It scares me in that way because I do not know what to expect. I also know that I need to do this because it will help me to become a better person and to further help others in need around me. Being able to participate in this experience excites me because I will be doing something new and I enjoy the challenge that adversity brings. It fills me with curiosity, wondering how I will fit into Mexico and the people I will meet. Subconsciously I know that everything will be okay and that I will make friends there. For now I am just waiting for the next step.
